Notwithstanding the above, you may also wish to consider the Rt Rev Beilby Porteus, DD, Bishop of Chester and London (May 8, 1731 May 13, 1809). In 1783 Porteus delivered a well-reasoned and much-reprinted plea for The Civilisation, Improvement and Conversion of the Negroe Slaves in the British West-India Islands Recommended. Known today as;:The Anniversary Sermon.
Hi Octavius, i was trying to show clarity here by focusing on the British owned slaves, is it possible to know the various percenages of slaves owned by the various countries/ crowns? I know it is supposed to be quite an accurate count because of the very detailed records kept by the slave owners overseers, as slaves were an incredibly valuable commodity. It's not a statistic to be proud of is it, but I am sure the Bitish owned less than other European owners.
This business of some modern people constantly grovelling about slavery which started and finished long, long before we were here is not realistic. At the end of the American War of Independence and again at the end of the American War all of the survivors of the Black Regiments (slaves) which fought for the British were offered that they could stay where they were, be resettled in the Caribbean (principally Trinidad) or be returned to Africa. Not one opted for Africa. And the same today same today, although they grizzle a lot and dream of compo like the River of Gold not one has returned to Africa.
