Dusk To Dawn Plug In Night Lights
11 Answers
I need to buy a couple of these. I have one that a friend gave me years ago and it has a little 7w bulb. It gives quite a good, soft light. Most of the ones I have seen today are LED. Both Maplins and Robert Dyas had sold out of the non LED ones which makes me think that they are either better (and people are buying them) or they are being discontinued. Does anyone have experience of LED night lights and if so, are they any good?

I picked up a twin pack at Robert Dyas today and the lady behind the counter agreed to try one out on a power socket in the shop (whilst covering the sensor with her thumb). Neither myself or the shop staff could see much light and she said that the old style lights were better.
Under the EU Ecodesign Directive (2005/32/EC), no incandescent lamps of under 60W can be placed on the market since 1 September 2012. So it's not surprising that you can't buy a night light with a 7W tungsten bulb in it.
The LED ones are more energy efficient and should last longer.
Much as I love Maplin Electronics ('cos they're one of the few High Street stores where the staff actually know their stuff) they're not cheap. Robert Dyas can sometime be rather pricey too. Argos can sell you a twin pack of 'dusk to dawn' night lights (with excellent customer reviews) for just £9.79:

Buenchico - they are available and this was what I was thinking about http:// www.map lin.co. uk/p/au tomatic -night- light-7 w-gc53h but I don`t have time to buy one off the internet as I need it by tomorrow.
When the EU regulation came into effect, only manufactures and importers were prohibited from placing incandescent bulbs onto the market. Existing stocks held by retailers were unaffected. Maplin Electronics must have had a lot in stock (or, more probably, bought up lots of stock that the manufacturers were trying to get rid off just before the cut-off date).
I can recommend a torch night-light. Like either of these.

Not only does it give a soft night light but you also have a torch on hand easy to find in the dark, and all ready to go in case of a winter power cut.

Thanks Maydup. I need it to light the downstairs and upstairs hallway for my poor little pussycat who has become blind due to detached retinas. I have realised that she does have a little bit of sight in her right eye and I`m not sure whether she can see movement or light (maybe a bit of both). For that reason, I need a dusk to dawn light and one that is not sensor activated.
Buenchico - I had no problem finding the bulbs in Homebase this evening http:// www.hom ebase.c o.uk/en /homeba seuk/ni ghtligh t-light -bulbs- --2-pac k-82004 8 I just have a problem finding the lamps
