I am trying to convert video clips (not sure if they're AVI format or not - just coming up under video clips in my XP window but I want to convert to mpeg using TMPGEnc software. Unfortunately it doesn't like the format and won't open it saying it's unsupported. I can't understand why not as the software is supposed to be able to handle all different formats. Can anyone give me some tips on using TMPGEnc please? Many thanks

what type of file is it?

Under Windows Explorer (windows key + E to launch) you may have to click Tools > Folder options
then the "view" tab and of the options that you can see listed, one near the bottom of the visible window should say "hide file extensions for known types"
uncheck this.

Hi Stevie21 - thanks for your reply. Followed your instructions and the video clip is an AVI file. This being the case, I should be able to import into my software, TMPGEnc, but it will not accept file. Any more ideas please? Thank you so much!!
Works fine for me - are you able to convert other file types and does this particular avi file play in your media player OK?
It's not corrupted or anything?

Also, how big is the avi file?

Hi again stevie21 - yes I can convert other files no problem at all and yes avi file plays fine in my media player and it's a very small file - less than 1mb. I think it may be to do with the way it was initially recorded - it's quite an old file and I used (at the time) a gadget type video camera - so perhaps it's the codec that was used. I think I may have to give up anyway!!
You could - if really desperate - burn it to a CD as a VCD and then rip that file to mpeg with some unspecified software.

If you're desperately deserate email it to me. I have an unguessable email address at gmail.com
