Should Our News Channels Be Giving So Much Time To The Paris Event?
38 Answers
Now before I get attacked on here lets make one thing very clear. This is a terrible attrocity that should not be dismissed or forgotten
But that said we have our News channels playing 24*7 (Sky News seems to be showing little else) the BBC are currently interviewing a Muslim couple to show how wonderful they are - nice propaganda there with my money.
Surely this is playing into the terrorists hands? One of their aims is to spread uncertainty and fear, dedicating a channel to it must only serve as a 24*7 ISIS advert to the potential converts?
Now that there seems to be an acceptance we (The West & Russia) are at war should News blackouts be imposed or at least restricted to bare minimum reporting? This would at least be one tool in tackling the root issue - home grown Jihadists, and that's is where we need to be concentrating.

What ymb actually meant was 'the war between ISIS on one side and the west and Russia on the other
That is also spurious of course
ISIS is at war with pretty much everyone it would seem
They will never form a global caliphate of course but as long as they think they can it will mean trouble ...

24 hours before the Paris attack, ISIS attacked another major capital, ciry with two suicide bombers. They killed 43 people. You possibly didn't know, because it got minimal news coverage.

The contrast between the reporting of the two events tells us a lot about our news agenda and ourselves. There are many reasons for the difference. Suffice to say, ymb, I agree with you. The extent of the coverage of the Paris attackis spreading fear, and that is what terrorists want. So the news outlets, TV, radio, newspapers and web, are doing the terrorists job for them
I obviously wouldn't agree with a news blackout. But restricting reporting to the bare facts, and maybe imposing a limit of less than 50% of a news broadcast to the terrorist event and showing 50% of other news.

//ISIS is at war with pretty much everyone it would seem
They will never form a global caliphate//
Yes, and do you know the crazed thinking behind this? The extremist view is that as the world is Allah's and they are the only ones carrying out his wishes, every part of the world is rightfully theirs, and WE should be removed from territories which we have no rights to. So they won't be annihilating us, they will be simply taking what is rightfully theirs.
To simple minds, everything is so simple.

So, let me understand it right, Do you have problem with,
1 – Media is giving too much coverage to Paris attack and not to the people being (or have been) killed in other parts of the world?
2 – Media giving coverage to Muslim couple who are trying to sound nice?
And finally, are West and Russia really at war?

Although I don't agree at all with gromit about restricting news coverage, it's an interesting point about Lebanon which I'd been pondering also
It can't just be a 'proximity' thing as the Sydney Opera House bathed in French colours proves. Of course Beirut was not as bad as Paris, awful as it was, but had it been I am sure we would not have had the same reaction, the 'twibbon' mania etc
I am not criticising any of that, and I don't think it's anything to do with 'oxygen of publicity' (I've never really understood the reasoning behind that) but it is an uncomfortable thought, to me anyway

Had ONLY 43 been murdered in Paris, the same as Beirut, the news responses around the world would not have been equal.
In a way, the Lebanon bombings were more significant. It is yet another country on the ISIS arch. Another target for their expanding Caliphate. The contagen spreads.
The French response will be more high level bombing of holes in the desert. A pin prick to ISIS. They won't be defeated by the odd bomb hitting a pick up truck from 5 miles high. But the French have ruled put boots on the ground, the one thing that can stop ISIS in the tracks.

probably true. but how do you single out ISIS fighters? they don't wear uniforms and melt into the general population. you couldn't round up all males just because they wear the shalwar kameez and a huge beard.
