I am using windows 10 Operating system and today suddenly ' critical error, your start menu isnt working, we will try to fix it the next time you sign in' has appeared on the screen and I can't access files on my system. I continually sign out and sign in again but this message keeps appearing every time I sign in. Help! Anyone got ideas as to how to fix this? Thanks very much in advance

Does that display?
If so, try accessing the option 'Update & Security' and select 'Windows Update' which hopefully will download the latest system updates that reportedly incorporates a potential fix for your problem.

Have you got avast antivirus installed? If so uninstall it in safe mode. to enter safe mode do as below.
//press ctrl+alt+delete, and in the bottom right hand corner you click the power button. Before you click 'restart', hold down the shift key until the next screen is displayed (blue). Then click troubleshoot, advanced options, start-up settings, restart. Once it restarts, press the F4 key, and when it restarts you will be in safe mode. Now just do the normal thing to uninstall avast and then reboot following the installation//
