I spoke to wife re frequency of colonosopy checks with a family history of bowel cancer.
She said that her hospital would keep you on their records and notify you every 5years to attend.
As you probably know they remove small polyps (painless) if found as they do the camera procedure. A cancerous polyp would take 10years to develop fully and start doing its nasty work so a 5 yearly check is more than safe. Hope that helps. :-)

Really?

Unless things have changed, an adenomatous polyp may become malignant in less than 5 years.........hence the necessity for a 5year or more frequent check.

Say, for example, malignant change were to occur 3 years after colonoscopy, because of the very slow doubling rate (growth) of the tumour, at 5 years it would still be very small and at an early stage with excellent chance of cure.

I don't really understand your last question sqad, but then I've flu at the moment so may be hard of understanding.
I'll try again - a polyp may become malignant in the intervening 5 years, but because of the very slow growth will still be very small - probably less than one centimetre - and still confined to the polyp, with no spread to the bowel wall.
It would take another 5 years to spread to the bowel wall/lymph nodes.

That is my point and hence why 5 year checks are the minimum time in patients over 60 years of age with adenomatous polyps.

I can only quote what a certain colo/rectal surgeon with whom my wife currently works. He tells his patients that a first cell takes 10 years to develop fully into full blown cancer . She will now bring her hospital guidelines home wih her on Monday re this subject and I will report them back to you.
