When I try to open threads that include a few youtube clips it slows down the loading of that thread, is my computer on the way out?

It is old and operates on XP and my browser is firefox?

It may be your broadband connection cant cope with downloading all that video at once.

But also XP is now a REALLY old operating system that was designed well before may of today's technologies were available (like online video).

Using XP nowadays is a bit like driving in formula 1 in a Ford Anglia.

Treat yourself to a new PC, you can get a whole new system for £350 or so
Pages with several Youtube videos embedded into them (from any website) can be rather slow to load at times but here on AB things can go exceptionally slowly if you're not blocking the ads that will be trying to download at the same time.

Like VHG, I'd suggest that it's time to upgrade a bit anyway but you can do it for far less than £350. Indeed, assuming that you've already got a decent monitor, £50 to £100 would be a better price range:

(NB: That link is just the result of a bit of googling. It's where I buy from, both for myself and for friends who ask me to find them good quality products).
Firefox is a notorious memory hog and leacker, so also depends on how much ram you have.
might want to consider using a small piece of software like Firemin or similar and see if that helps, its free and no spyware or bloatware etc.

ive been using it for years with no prob and Firefox uses hardly any memory compared to before.

Thank you for all your very interesting and valuable information.

Yes you are right XP has past it's sell by date I suppose, but the only trouble is, it's like an old pair of slippers I feel comfortable with it and don't know how I would get on with these new more complicated operating systems.
