Safety Deposit Facility
18 Answers
Where can I store a quantity of cash allowing easy access whenever I want? I'm thinking in terms of a safety deposit box at a bank but I'm having difficulty locating the service at any of the major banks in the UK.
One sees so much of this type of thing happening in movies but is it really feasible in the UK?
Thank you

You need to do a google search for safe deposit boxes in your area. This gives you an idea of prices in Birmingham:

The problem with safes is two fold. I've got to decide whether to buy a fireproof one or a normal security safe. You also need to factor in the weight of the safe as you don't want anyone carting it off. To make the latter difficult, the safe needs to be bolted down. So is that wall or floor bollted? Let's start by saying that fireproof safes have no bolt holes as they would allow the ingress of heat and smoke. I cannot site the safe on the ground floor so it has to go upstairs. Its not possible to bolt the safe to the floor upstairs as its of floorboards and steel girder construction. So I'm back to bolting it to the wall. Try finding a good strong safe up to around £300 that you can bolt to a wall and is fireproof
don't know if these are of any help MT

The safe I've got came with pre-drilled holes, so I'd assume that fire-proof ones would also have some kind of way to secure it to a wall/floor, or what's the point in getting one??
I used longer rawl bolts with mine, to provide extra strength, so it'll be harder to rip off the wall.
Yea I suppose that someone could knock the wall down, but the fact that it's on a neighbouring wall (so the neighbours might notice the wall being knocked down) and my house also has an alarm, might just help save the day :)

Gizmonster, fire-proof safes are usually very heavy to hinder easy removal from the premises. The idea is that they could not be moved without heavy equipment which means they don't need to be bolted down.
woofgang, yes the funds are there to pay for a first-class safe but I'm reluctant to spend it on a safe. The day will come when the money's been spent and then I'll have a useless, expensive lump of metal that I'll regret having spent thousands of pounds on!!

I'm sure there will be fire-proof safes out there, that you can bolt to the wall.
If not, there are def fire-proof ones that bolt to the floor - is there no way of fastening it down in a downstairs room??
You mention steel girders upstairs - is it not possible to fasten the safe to these somehow??
