What is meant by sim free? Does it mean that you don't need a sim at all which to me makes no sense at all or is it the same as an unlocked phone ?

Sim free means you JUST buy the phone, no sim or contract. However even a sim free phone could still be locked to one provider (Vodafone sell a sim free phone that is locked to Vodafone) But you have to have a sim to make calls. You can use a phone without a sim if you want to just use it on wi fi like a "tablet", but it wont have a phone number and cant make calls.
