I explained and explained and explained to classes that religion (unlike race) was an option and that one could choose which one to belong to, or even choose none at all. To a person the Muslim pupils accepted that Christians, anyone, could become a Muslim - but it was beyond their comprehension that a Muslim could become a Christian. It could have had something to do with the fact that renouncing Islam is, effectively, a death sentence.
I would hope that the hash-tag might be helpful to any Muslim with doubts. There used to be 'safe houses' in Bradford for converts, I expect that they still exist and in other areas too.

It could also have something to do with the fact that Muslims believe that everyone who has ever existed, in reality or otherwise – from Adam to the present day - was or is Muslim. Abraham was Muslim, as was Moses and Jesus – only they didn’t know it because Mohammed didn't write his book until centuries later. People don’t ‘convert to Islam – they ‘revert’ apparently. No escape.
