Fence Between Properties

I am responsible for the fence between my neighbour and I. I replaced the whole thing some years ago and occasional panels since.
What are my neighbour's rights and obligations? Can he paint his side any colour he wants, tie plants to it etc. As a supplementary am I obliged to paint his side?

if the fence is yours. He cannot pant it or attach anything to it without your permission. He does not have any rights or obligations regarding the upkeep of the fence.
However, if he wants to paint it - great - it's not like you have to look at his side, and painting it will probably make it last longer, If you want to paint his side you will have to ask him to go on his land.

Generally by virtue of the fact one owner put it up. The concept of a shared fence is a myth, and land registry land titles that declare that a wooden fence is shared are few and far between.

If you and your neighbour had a little local agreement to share the cost of a replacement fence then fine. It's not worth calling out the expensive lawyers to resolve.
