Double check the speakers connections at the rear of the pc. If they are powered speakers make sure the transformer is plugged in and switched on.
How are they connected, audio leads or usb sockets? Control Panel/Sound gives various options to try.

What version of Windows?

If it's not an easy fix, take it back and tell them there overhaul wasn't very good and complain.
If it's just been in for an overhaul it could be that a wire hasn't been re-connected. I'd tae it back and ask them to sort it out.
Try googling 'no sound on pc'. I've just done that, and there's plenty of advice there.

thanks guys,i'll give them a call in the morning as its 20+miles each way so i'll see if they can talk me through it first.
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the possibility of a missing sound driver.

A 'complete overhaul' of a computer suggests that the operating system might have been reinstalled after the drive has been wiped. If so, then (unless the sound card uses a driver that's native to Windows) the driver will need to be reinstalled.

Please tell us the exact make and model of your computer, Paul, together with the operating system that's now on it (such as Windows 7, 8.1 or 10). Then we'll be able to direct you to the download that you need.

thanks for the advice buenchico, its not got a make on it, its an independent shop that builds their own machines but all I can say is its running W7 and as you suggested its been wiped clean and started from as new(if that's the right terminology). all pics and documents were transferred to an external drive
I'm more convinced than ever then that they forget to reinstall the sound driver.

Download Belarc Advisor from here:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Double-click the file that you've downloaded. (When you're asked if you want the program to check for the latest definitions, choose 'Yes'). After a few moments a browser window will open, with a full analysis of your computer's system. Take a look under 'Mulimedia'. If your computer has a dedicated sound card it will be shown there. If it only shows something like 'High Definition Audio Device', it will mean that your computer uses 'on-board audio'.

The look at the first line under 'Main Circuit Board'. That tells you the make and model of your mainboard.

Tell us what you've found under those two entries and we'll probably be able to locate the download you need to reinstall the sound driver.

as you suggested buenchico it was something to do with the driver. you'll understand more than me- the guy said he left windows to do the updates automatically and it loaded the wrong drivers,if that makes any sense to you, but its beyond me. It only took 5minutes or so and he even gave me a tenner back when he realised how far I came. Don't think you'll get more genuine than that. thanks all for the advice but if its more than 2 or 3 easy steps I'm knackered
