Microwaving Pasta

Random buy yesterday, a microwave pasta cooker.

Has anyone used one before? It was only £1.99 so not great loss if it's rubbish but I'd have thought pasta makers would have a microwave option on if it were possible, like rice does and other things. I can't remember the last time I made rice in a saucepan.

It would be a good help for me with no heavy pan of water to lift.

While it means no lifting of heavy pansful of water, there's no saving in time. Pasta has to absorb the water it's cooking in, and this will take the same amount of time, whether it's in a pan on the hob or in the microwave. If lifting a heavy pan is too much for you, then fair enough, it could be handy, but otherwise it's just another kitchen gadget taking up space.

Time factor is ok with me :) I've got one of those metal baskets you can put your pasta in in the water so easier to lift out but then you still have to left the pan with the water in it

I'm hoping to give it a try later so will be interested to see how it goes, hoping it works! Less faffy if I want to make up some pasta lunch at work too.

I'm hoping it turns out better than the microwaving sausages disaster!

Good idea for a workplace with a microwave but no canteen, or eatery within reasonable distance. Beats pot noodles, that's for sure!

Eve, could you use metal containers/gadgets in your microwave? Unless otherwise, I don't think it would be wise to use the metal basket in the microwave.

I think most things beat a Pot Noodle :)

Don't worry, the basket isn't going anywhere near the microwave, I only use that when using a pan of water.

I'm definitely going to try it again, it needed a bit longer than it suggested but much less faff.

Microwaving Pasta:-
Place the bowl on top of a plate and put it in the microwave just in case any water spills over. Take the suggested cooking time from the pasta box and add 3-4 minutes. Check on the pasta when it's done and sample a piece or two. If the pasta is at desired doneness, strain the pasta over the sink.
