I have just done a quick résumé of this thread to check if I was vaguely coherent and noticed something strange. When I was a boy in Stoke, a tradition on new years eve was for someone in the family (usually me as the oldest child) to take a piece of coal out of the back door, and go around to the front door, knock, and be allowed in carrying the piece of coal. This was I think a superstition that brought good luck to the house. Well last night during our collective ramblings we took a reference to coal out of 2015s back door (via Holditch) and it was brought back in (via Hem Heath) at 00:01 through the front door of 2016.
