how do humax recorders (or other makes) record two programmes at once while watching an already recorded one,seems something must be working flat out ? cant find anything on the net to explain it

Humax tuners can demultiplex (extract) two channels from the same transponder at the same time. Hence you can actually record/view two at the same time.

its more how its put on the hard drive im looking for is there only one read writer arm etc?

My tivo box records three channels at the same time whilst I am watching a recording and it doesn't get hot.

I suspect it is no different to me downloading several things at once on to my pc hard drive.

I'd guess it may time split between reading and writing and have more than enough speed to cope with both data streams without error.
