The lesson of the SDP is there to be learned. And indeed the lesson of UKUP
IP. New parties don't fit well in our electoral system.
The right would love it though.
More likely are defections to other parties, but I suggest that is only likely when the defector is actively seeking power.
That isn't to say that a 'new party' might not emerge, but it would have to be the main body of the old one with the smaller bit lopped off to oblivion.
Given that the last Labour 'Gang of Four' got mingled in with the Liberals, becoming the Lib Dems...and just look where all of them are now...the members of any new such gang would have to be the most starry-eyed of politicians!
I'd have thought more likely civil war in the labour party after which, hopefully, they will arise from a stronger and more relevant party able to hold Dave to account.
