Please can someone help a friend has worked at a bakers shop for 20 years which was sold under tupe last year. 3 weeks ago the new owner said he wanted to refurbish the shop so gave all staff 2 weeks paid leave. Last monday they returned to work as he had previously told them to only to find the shop shuttered and they could not get in. On wednesday after being unable to contact the owner my friend got a text message 'gone bankrupt, no more money' what can the staff do?

Sounds like a ploy to close the shop and avoid paying redundancy to the staff. Go to the CAB by all means and ask them to search the insolvency register (actually you can do that yourself on-line. Type in the county court he would have attended to be made bankrupt and OR's office for your area, then his name and see if his details are registered) The register will give his home address and you can go round and ask him what he intends to do about redundancy payments.
