is there some sort of conversion chart that can work out X amount of inches of snow is equivalent to X amount of mm or inches of rain or the other way about? as a friend has been putting photos on facebook of her horses playing in almost 4 feet of snow in west virginia over the last 2 days, i wondered how much rain that would've been if just a few degrees warmer. i know it wouldn't be totally accurate as snow drifts but where i am in wales the rain also comes at you sideways

From what I remember a LONG time ago, 1 inch of rain is roughly equal to 10-12 inch of snow .... let's see what others say though ....
That's about right for soft falling snow but less if wet and more densely packed - perhaps 1:5

Temperature is significant the above site is a help.
Perhaps get your friend to get a tubeful, surface to ground, take it indoors to melt, and see how many inches she gets ?

Thanks all I didn't realise it would be that much rain, I always thought snow was more bulky than that
