Bmw Mot Protect - Shock Absorbers

Hi All, Bought my car from BMW last January and got the Approved Used Car Warranty which did cover a few things last year. Took it in for its MOT this morning and they advised that it has failed due to a cracked alloy (accept ill have to pay for this myself, £400, wonderful!!) and a seal has gone on the OSR shock absorber (around £320) . Now, seals are not covered under warranty which I know but with the warranty I also got MOT Protect which states that on the MOT "a long list of key items from electrical and lighting equipment to steering and suspension are covered", Do you think the shock absorber should be covered under the suspension section? Thanks for any help

You've not told us how old the car is. BMW's 'MOT Protect' offer only covers the car's first MOT test.

The cost of the MOT test, re-test and advisories will not be covered neither will failure as a result of neglect or adjustments and damage resulting from impact or accident, or faulty repair of any item be covered. The MOT repair work has to be carried out by a BMW Authorised Dealer / Workshop within 30 days of the MOT inspection failure. The vehicle must have a complete service history according to Manufacturer’s criteria."

Thanks for that. It's an 08 plate but as part of the used car warranty on the FAQ page it says that the MOT protect is included (can't find link as I'm on my phone now laptop is updating!). We got a letter from them to say they would do a pre out of warranty check so I booked it in for that and an MOT at same time and in that letter it says the car is covered under MOT Protect.

I take your point tho, but if it is under the MOT protect should the shockers be covered?

I thought about that TWR I know they always say to have both done at same time. Just not too flush at the min!!

The Norm Ali, when the Shocks get replaced they replace in Pairs, the reason you have one shock stronger that the other, I doubt very much If the Shock Seals are covered, I presume you paid for the Warrantee? they are not worth the Paper they are written on, they try to get out of paying anyway they can, the Rear Shocks are not a bad job to do on the BMW, I have replaced mine when I had the bema.

Fair enough just thought I'd check. We didn't pay for the warranty it was just included. We had the starter motor and high pressure fuel pump replaced under the warranty in April last year so at least it covered those. Price you pay to have your dream car!! We knew stuff would be expensive when we bought it. Got the insurance this month too - oh the joys!!

Part are not as bad as you may think Ali, I changed the full set on the E36 Coupe I had, you can bye a lot via eBay, If you can do the work yourself that's all well and good, there's a firm Called Quarry Motors in Sheffield, they are vey good, 247 car spares + a few other's.

Cracked alloy's can be repaired, no idea of the cost though.

For the cost of repair I would go on eBay or that Quarry Motors I have told you about, Quarry Motors that I'f you are in the UK, If you do go down that road of a Scrap Yard, fully check the wheel, with respect to Tony's reply, Once cracked never the same, that crack will always be weak, but that's my personal opinion.

I must say I'm with TWR on repairing a cracked wheel. There are a few things on a car which stand between you and the undertaker, steering, brakes, wheels and tyres mainly. If the car won't start, tough. If it won't stop???

Ali, a couple of years ago I bough a 2nd hand alloy from a local bloke, it was not the same as my own BBS Sports wheel but, I bought is for £40 with a decent tyre, cleaned & inspected the wheel then sold it on eBay, if you go on eBay & type in BMW the year of your car, spare wheels, they will come up from £40>>>>> to £90, and again regards to Tony's post, for the size / Weight of your Beema I definitely, not use a cracked / repair one, I understand your money plight, we have all been there, the way I would think regards a Repair, would your Insurance "Pick Up" on this they are very quick for looking for away out.

Hi all. Thanks for your advice. BMW decided that they would repair the shocker under warranty so that's been done and we've had the wheel repaired by a recommended and reputable local company.

Last April I smacked said wheel off the kerb at about 50mph as I didn't realise it was there!! So it's probably been cracked since then. They showed my husband the crack before it was repaired and he said it wasn't as bad as he expected.
