is there a home remedy cure for really bad throbbing toothache?
14 Answers
i have had horrendous throbbing toothache 24 hours now. went to dentist today and he said i need root canal treatment, 2- 4 visits, the first one not being until next tuesday. in the meantime i am taking 2 antibiotics that he prescribed, one in conjuction with the other is apparently more effective. i have been taking my own 5oomg x 2 paracetamol with codeine that i used after a knee operation but they just arent taking the pain away. i am dreading another sleepless night. it comes and it goes, more comes than goes though. so, is there a home remedy that could be recommended. was going to get some oil of cloves today as used to have that as a kid. didnt feel like trailing round for it though as i felt so dead, dont know it is still sold in chemists, any ideas , please help. also, sorry to go on, anyone had root canal treatment, what is it exactly, what causes me to have this?

You can also buy clove oil at the chemist and it will reduce or even eliminate the pain for a while. Problem is it is soooooo bitter and hasn't got a nice taste. I have used Olbas oil (not sure about spelling) which can sometimes work. Hope this helps and you feel better soon.
thanks everyone, will go to boots tomorrow to buy some oil of cloves, first thing i will be there. gonna try some whiskey now to keep me going. yes, a gun would be great, wish i had one at this very moment. the pain is like a mounting crescendo then it whizzes round inside the tooth until it is almost sizzling with maximum pain. sending pain round both the top and bottom of the left hand side of my mouth, apparently there is a nerve that goes all the way round here. thought i would share my pain with you as you forget just how bad toothache really is until you get it! please pray for me!
and, sorry to be a party pooper but I've got horrible toothache myself and know what I'm talking about.....don't actually swallow the alcohol becasue if you do it'll stop the antibiotics from working.
I'm finding (until I can have treatment) that clove oil (vile but effective) and paracodol at least deaden the pain and make it copable with.
See you at the dentist's!!!

Fact: The only effective way to relieve this pain is to achieve drainage of the abscess this entails either removal of the tooth and ultimately the problem or drainage through the root canal system of the tooth not always effective but has the benefit of retaining the tooth).
Sorry to be anal but here a a couple of facts for you all:
Clove oil does not work for an apical abscess of tooth, there isn't even a theoretical method to suggest any possible way in which it could, it is merely the placebo effect at its best.
An abscess is a collection a pus in this case the pain is caused by pressure (the pus has nowhere to go!) even as a lay person it shouldn't be difficult to appreciate that anything applied topically is completely useless.
Secondly holding a known oral carcinogen Alcohol in your mouth will simply increase the risk of developing oral cancer. The best way to get any effect from alcohol is a systemic one i.e. drink it! But not too much!!
Certain painkillers ibuprofen, paracetamol and to a lesser extent codeine phosphate may alleviate some of this pain.

I'm sat here with my friend who is a dentist and heres her answer.
the pain you're feeling is the nerve dying. Eventually it will subside when the nerve dies... the only way to cure the pain is to remove the nerve (ie root canal treatment) . Meanwhile, Pain relief and ant-iinflamatory medication (ie... 400 mg ibuprofen and 500 mg paracetamol every 4-6 hours) should help.
Do not place anything hot against the side of your face, if anything place something cold against your face and try to sleep it off.
Clove oil on the side of the tooth will not help.
If the pain does subside, then you must still go to the dentist, otherwise you'll get an abscess which IS painful.
