No Sub-Titles On Catch-Up & Demand?

I have been complaining to BBC,ITV,Ch4,Ch5 & Sky for the past 18 months about the above, and at last had some kind of an excuse.
They tell me that its not as easy to do, as it might seem.

Apparently sub-titles are not embedded into the programme files, but are not transmitted separately from their own files, and can not be transferred to catch up or demand.

All the cable companies are trying to find a way around this problem, so far with only little success, and there is still a long way to go yet........

How long ago was it, did a man land on the moon?

It's just as well you can record programmes with the subtitles on, trt. That's how I get round it

Me too hc, but sometimes not always possible if you have others in the family wanting to watch/record other programmes.

With all the tech they have, just seems ridiculous.
I can get subtitles on the iplayer on my phone, seems bizarre you can't get it on the TV!
I've just tried it on my pc, subtitles are there on catch up. Tried it on an episode of Marigold Hotel
Subtiles also showing on A Touch of Frost on the ITV hub
