Brightbox Routers A Problem

Wonder if anyone can help please? A friend who has broadband with EE has 'gone through' three Brightbox routers over the last several months and cannot understand why they stop working and have to be replaced. They have been on surge protected sockets but they just 'die' for no reason as in no electric getting through.

Does anyone know if these particular boxes are prone to this or there's a known fault? My friend would like to try to find out as he's getting a little fed up with being without the internet whilst EE think about replacing them. Thanks in advance for your help.

I forgot to ask, can you use any router box to connect to the internet or do you have to use the one the provider sends you?
Can not comment on the actual issue but you can buy any *suitable* modem/router you wish, as I use one I bought myself, as does my woman. Service providers supply one when you first join to ensure you have access, but they don't opt for top-of-the-range stuff.
Ive often wondered about buying a decent router myself, I dont know if it would noticeably improve anything though.

Thanks guys, he's been sent a different router from EE so maybe that will cure the problem. Thanks for your input.
