Before the debate kicks off and before we get sidetracked by the usual moans about 3Ts use of Cockney Rhyming Slang: “My arris = My Aristotle = My Bottle and Glass = My Rump (this version has been edited for broadcast before the 9 o’clock watershed). “Me old china” = Me old China Plate = Me Old Mate. Yes, DC did indeed ask for next to nothing and has got a...

Mikey, Dave already has all the bacon if he'd have the balls to use it. When I am in any sort of dispute with a company and I cannot get through to them, I simply cancel the Direct debit and wait, they very quickly start talking. Dave should do that instead of scurrying round Yerp begging for what he already has.
TTT....well he could try that I suppose but I am not sure he has big enough cojones for the job. I think its worth pointing out here that while some people here in Britain want us to to leave, most, if not al of the other countries want to see us stay. I would have thought that would be a large bargaining chip for dave to use, as indeed he may already be doing of course.
I am beginning to feel just a little bit sorry for dave here (!).......he is damned if does, and damned if he doesn't. He seems to be on a hiding to nothing.
If the vote goes against in the forthcoming referendum, I can see him standing down asap.....and then the fun will start !

At the meeting yesterday, a representative of one of the 'Eastern' members (missed who it was) said If Britain stops immigrants from other EU countries sending child benefits money back home, they should also stop UK citizens from sending child benefit monies overseas - alluding I guess, to those who are sending it to Pakistan, Bangla Desh and Nigeria etc.
Doesn't he have a good point?

“I do not see the connection between a philosopher and a container of liquid.”
It’s a “double shuffle” example of the rhyming slang, OG. There is no connection between the philosopher and the container other than the rhyme:
Arris = Aristotle = Bottle (and Glass) = Rump.
Similar confusion surrounds “kettle” which is used in place of watch (the timepiece)
Kettle = Kettle on the Hob = Fob = Fobwatch.

I forgot to add that I heard Chuka Umunna (crazy name, crazy guy) on the wireless last night. He is a fervent Euromaniac. He was explaining to his phone-in caller that people should not believe that the EU is controlled by officials like Jean-Claude Junckers 88. He explained that the real power in the EU lies with its democratically elected MEPs. He explained that Mr Juncker is really like the head of the EU’s civil service. (No, I’m not joking).
A little later I saw some street interviews on the BBC where people were asked if they had heard about the EU referendum. Many had not. Many more had little or no idea what it was that Mr Cameron was trying to “negotiate” on Britain’s behalf. Hopefully these people will not bother to vote in the referendum. But if they do there is a grave danger that they will be swayed by the drivel spouted by people such as the shiny-suited Mr Umunna and vote to “leave things (which they haven’t a clue about) as they are”.

I think there is a slight difference, Khandro.
Parents from outside the EEA and Switzerland cannot usually claim child benefit for children that do not live with them. The eastern European leader may have been referring to cash received for their children living with them in the UK but which is then sent “home” to other family members or friends.
By contrast, of course, citizens of other EU countries living in the UK can claim child benefit for their children living elsewhere in the EU.
Of course the government cannot (and should not seek to) control what people do with their cash once it has been properly paid to them. The Eastern European leader was being a bit disingenuous to introduce this confusion.

NJ; Yes, I think you are right on that.
But on the rhyming slang you have missed out the beginning;
In a performance I saw at The Royal Court in the early 60's called 'Brecht on Brecht' - a collection of Brecht's sketches. I still remember,
"Why are you always climbing up Mr Smith's plaster?"
"Plaster?"
"Plaster - Paris, - Paris - Arris, Arris - Aristotle, - Aristotle - Bottle, Bottle - Bottle and Glass, - up his ....!"
