Sadly, the NRA make hay out of these stories, encouraging a tacit acceptance that '**** happens' and suggesting everyone buys guns so mass shooters can be brought down, like a rabid dog, before things progress too far.

They made mileage out of the cinema shooting because it was inside a shopping mall with a 'no guns' sign on the entrances which law-abiding folk dutifully complied with.

Note that some religions insist on terrible consequences in the afterlife for suicide. I cannot prove a link but "death by cop" is a recognised thing, over there and I wonder if they're using that as a way around doing themselves in?
