Vegetarians opt to not eat meat, or meat products, usually because they disagree with farming methods, or the concept of an animal dying to provide food, when an alternative is available. Milk is not usually excluded, as this is an animal by-product.

Vegans opt not to eat any animal products, and this includes milk fish, eggs, and they will often refuse to wear anything made of animal byproucts such as leather, although wool is acceptable, as this obtaine without distress to an animal.

Both issues are a matter of personal choice, usually dicated by concience.

Thanks, andy, this question was prompted by a news article about Heather Macartney not being able to go to a summit for Veggies and Vegans against milk,

I understand all the others, but couldn't figure the milk angle, I posted on F&D becuse I thought this is where i'd most likeley get it answered.

We have a strict vegan here in the office and he won't use milk or butter because his beliefs are that the animal would not naturally produce milk unless it has a calf, therefore it is coerced into producing milk. I made an apple crumble and an apple pie once for work and glazed the pie with milk instead of egg, used marge osntead of butter for the pastry as well. Unfortunately he ate the crumble which had butter in it. Felt guilty but didn't tell him!!
