I am reliably informed (by a top London skin specialist) that Eumovate Ointment and Eumovate Cream have the same formula. Why then does the Ointment keep my Eczema completely under control whereas the Cream does not help at all? Any information would be most welcome. Thank you.
The difference between the cream and the ointment is that cream is water based and of a thinner consistency and ointment is oil based and of a thicker, more greasy consistency. Other than that your specialist is quite right, they are the same formula. It is most likely that that the ointment, being oil based, forms a protective layer over the skin and is therefore more protective from irritation whereas cream is generally absorbed into the skin leaving no protective layer.
aprilis is right, the ointment is thicker and therefore more concentrated and will work better on eczema that might be more severe, the cream is probably useful for lighter cases of the condition
