i had a 318i years ago, perhaps not with the same symptons but my water pump had gone? i would of thought the garage would of found the problem though??
Is it an E36 model (mid '98 - '05)? If so, the header-tank is a favourite. It's an unofficial design flaw that BMW are aware of...the facelift E36's from '02 onwards had their header tanks strengthened as a result.

waterpump? there is a valve/pipe at the exhaust area that is a common prob for bmws go back to the garage and complain they might/should give u some sort of goodwill gesture seeing as they have " diagnosed" the fault twice already but dont go all guns blazing if u complain!!! hope that helps
