Too expensive ToraToraTora ? Based on whose standards? Do you really want our manual workers to live on Chinese wages? A communist regime? As for India, yes they produce the best brains, but only for the highest caste and they only start really earning when they leave the country, for instance when they come here, which is bad right? I think you're arguing...

Correct me if I'm wrong (you will!) but I have heard a lot about our steel etc. being uncompetitive because of the high cost of energy occasioned by 'Green' policies. Teeside was allowed to go to the wall and EU legistlation was cited by the government as explaining their inability to intervene. Looks bad for Port Talbot then -unless, of course the government suddenly discovers it can intervene (lot of seats threatened in Wales).
Just seen Angela Eagle (Labour MP) on Sky wittering away to the effect that if The Government don't bail out TA TA Steel, it will still cost them (UK Gov) millions of £'s to clear up the site anyway.
Why would UK Gov. pay to clear up the site of a privately (Indian) owned Company, doesn't make sense, even for Labour.

Who will supply these raw materials.....the way we like them? I hope TATA cut their losses & accept a token sell off price of £1, as per BHS.

true enough. DC could decide different for Port Talbot but that would risk the EU applying a countermeasure to nullify any subsidy. A benefit of staying in the eu, eh?

that harks back to the original privatisations. when the assets were sold, the buyers were given exemptions (of years) on the setting up of decommissioning funds (restoration bonds), the offset being a slightly higher price for the assets, which the government then used to fund tax breaks for the banking sector. now the decommissioning funds are needed, there's nothing in the pot. this is most noticeable in the coal industry, where one authority in Wales is having to grant permission for a massive strip mining operation to fund the restoration of another huge hole that Celtic Energy walked away from a few years ago. Legalised theft, guys.
