Where I work we sort all outgoing, franked post into two bags, UK and International. We then fill out a docket for each type of post which lists how many items there are, if it's a letter or a package, the cost to post each item and how much it weighs. Then Mr posty has a little beeping scanner and once a month, we get an invoice from RM.

the franking machine has an internal and sometimes external modem which allows the machine to dial out and obtain credit, which is then deducted from the company. A bit like top up.

Companies that frank their own mail have a franking machine to do it on (obviously!!). You top them up with money with your credit card, and then it'll let you frank your post. When the money runs out, no more franking.

Kind of like your phone top up.

Hope that answers your question.

gosh how things have changed. When I worked in an office you took the franking machine to the PO to get it topped up!
Me too.... what a pain that was. And they loved us coming in at 4.45!!

and we pay 1p less on 1st and 2nd class!! LOL

we dial up and obtain the credit (if we have remembered to pass the invoice!)
