For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If you are a Civil Servant and are invited because of, for example, your long service then you don't need to take a day out of your leave allowance. Technically it's because you are said to be representing the Department you work, for so it counts as a day at work. I'm guessing - and it's only a guess - that the same would apply to the armed forces and such as the police, fire brigade and so on. Otherwise I would think it depends on the individual employer - I doubt there's any legislation saying it's a right.
