It is comparatively awful to look at, plus it is not ecologically friendly. In any case not all houses are suitable for this type of vandalism, and not everyone could afford a place designed with a drive (the cost would rocket if the right to park on the road was taken away). In addition visitors could not possibly park in the same drive/garden as the family they are visiting park their car. And why shouldn't drivers be able to park on the road they paid for many times over ? Insisting roads are only for moving traffic simply isn't workable; it'd just give more opportunities to beat up on drivers and make their life intolerable (so it'll probably be pushed for then).
It seems it has been illegal in London for 40 years, but not elsewhere:
