Mayor Boris Johnson told spectators they were gathered "in defiance of the barbarians" who destroyed the arch in the city, north-east of the Syrian capital Damascus, last year.

A fine gesture, is it not? I hope it will be well-guarded while it's here.

maybe Isis will blow this one up instead of people on the street. Far more 'constructive'......

jno, as Mamyalynne has said, it is made from Egyptian marble, but that aside, you have missed the point completely. Even if it had been made from polystyrene, it's a symbol - a gesture.
Here's an idea for a gesture. A fleet of buses destined for pastures sandy and filled with wild-eyed, bearded fantasists.
On second thoughts an arch is easier and does nowt, as per.

That arch will soon become a horseshoe *** magnet.

///I was reprimanded here for having a tear in my eye, but I suspect my critic is one who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.///

I well remember the wannabe Welshmans rant on that post.

Jno, if you'd read the first two paragraphs of the link you would know what it's made of.
Rhymes with farce bowl.

Douglas, doubt it. It's going on tour.

Baldric, he's pseudo-Welsh. ;o)

Not faux then?
Question Author
That'll do. :o)
The UK doesn't have a monopoly on farce bowls, Naomi.

Douglas, you surprise me. ;o)
I think there is a danger of being too perfectionist about the whole concept of restoration. If you physically restore a monument, does the brick have to come from the same source, the same quarry? Who can say that parts of a relic were not repaired out of expediency in the past, centuries ago, with some alien ingredient?
With our own (British) churches and listed buildings, repairs have been done in the past to avoid further deterioration. I don't think we have any less respect for such buildings or regard them as contaminated.
As someone else posted, in this case it is a gesture which has been done in the right spirit. That's good enough for me.
