I was very surprised that two main characters ended up dead, but what a story and so much going on.

They recently re-ran the previous series, which I saw enough fragments of to remind me that one of the conspirators was never brought to book and has, indeed come up, in rank.

I can't properly recall the name of the protected witness, bumped off in that series, but we saw more than one name crossed out on that list and one seemed more familiar than the others.

So this latest series is a continuation of the plot and it was never made clear what the dead protected witness had got themself mixed up in.

We enjoyed last week's episode, but got a bit lost last night as we have never watched the series before. I will have to try to find the story so far.

I thought the previous one was a "new series" but it turned out to be series 3 (???).

I'm 'with it', so far but do not know how self-contained series 1 & 2 were, plot-wise. I'm hoping a from-the-start fan can help us out, in that regard.

In a way, there is more suspense and less second-guessing by not being aware what the background conspiracy is about.

In all honesty, in order to be fully in the picture you really do need to watch Series One and Two. Both are essential viewing, particularly 1, which will explain in more detail the involvement of DCI 'Dot' Cottan and one of the names on the list he found in Sgt Danny Waldron's flat.

For what it's worth, I did say(only in discussions with work colleagues and young ChillDoubt) at the end of Series 2 that DCI Denton(Hawes) would probably make a return as a result of procedural errors/ambiguities in her arrest and conviction.

As Series 4 has already been commissioned by the BBC I would urge anyone who believes they will become a fan to buy the DVD of Series One, it is gripping.

As soon as he pulled the gun on Denton in the car I knew he'd shoot her - I even said it out loud (nobody else in the room) ! I think it's the 'Game of Thrones Effect' where main characters are often killed off, and many programmes are copying this. Actually, in the previous series of Line of Duty, much was made of Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife) joining the cast, only for her to be defenestrated in the first episode.
