Yes Football pools were really huge!
There was a network of 1,000's of collectors who would go door to door collecting the coupons and stakes. Every factory and office had a collector, the newspapers all had 'pools plans' which you could use for your stake.
When the results came in on the TV there were forecasts of the pools dividends and if you needed to claim.

^^ I didn't realize it was still going as recently as you say. I knew the pools still operate but I thought the collectors were long gone.
