why is a 8 track tape called an 8 track whats it to do with? And were they sided?

They were a continuous tape which held 4 stereo tracks thus giving you 8 tracks on an endless loop.

It was a cartridge, Unlike a casette with a begining and an end, this was just a continuous tape loop. This link will probably explain better. I think the word "track" actually referred to the tape width (ie, casette has 2 - one one way, one the other) rather than the amount of songs.

...of course my answer is in reference to 8-track cartridges as opposed to 8-track reel-to-reel.
