Recently soon after starting off I found to my horror that I could hardly steer the car. I managed to creep to the nearest garage turned off the engine reported the problem and then to my embarrassment the mechanic could find nothing wrong. Today the same experience has happened. Again I turned off the engine; started up and everything was again working ok. Any ideas anybody?
Many modern cars have power steering using electric motors (It always used to be a pump driven by a belt similar to a fan belt). I don't know about your particular car but it sounds like it could be an intermittent problem with that. The stering will always work if the power bit fails (legal obigation) but the steering will become heavy. I suggest you get a garage to check-out the steering electrics.
I have an I30, and a year or so ago it developed a steering column fault. Were I you I'd take it to a main dealer. In my case the steering finally failed altogether and I had to get my recovery service to take the car to the main dealer, but they were able to fix it. I'm unsure if this second occurrence of a steering issue means it is a common problem or a coincidence, but get the Hyundai experts to check it out first.
Looking at tonyav's links (well done tonyav) I think you ought to bring them to the attention of the garage you're taking the car to and suggest that they contact Hyundai with a view to the work being done free-of-charge (or imply that the local press may be intested).
