This has been around for quite some time since the EU brought in a law about compensation. My sister has claimed a couple of times.

we tried to claim for ourselves but as it was a package deal, they hadn't sold us the tickets. The tour operator had to do it for us.

Won't be able to do it when Britain leaves the EU, I expect.
