Does the NFC function work if the device is kept in a protective case?

I can't see it would be very protective if the card worked whilst still in the case.
Do you mean a case that protects your phone against being dropped? Then, yes, it should.

If you mean a NFC blocking case... then it shouldn't.

Thanks both, my phone is in an Otterbox case to protect it against drops so fingers crossed it will work! I do know that wireless charging doesn't work when the phone is in the Otterbox, which is what made me question the NFC.
