I also disagree that the packaging is irrelevant, it clearly is not, kids identify with brands very strongly in all aspects of life. When I was at school they would make a great show of flashing their Marlboro packs for example, so that all their peers knew how sophisticated they were. Flashing a brown pack with a rotting toe won't have the same effect at all.
^^ Exactly pixie. The banning of cigarette packs of less than 20 and tobacco packs of less than 30g will mean it is more expensive to buy a pack to 'share'. I know our local corner shop keeper very well, he says kids and teenagers 'club together to get enough to buy 10 cigarettes or a small (9g) pouch of tobacco, so they can share. He is very strict on only selling to over 18s and will not sell if he thinks the buyer is going to hand them out to others. These measures will help in the respect.
I also agree with TTT that the branding is very important.Young smokers are very 'brand aware' and those who can only afford a cheap brand are subject to ridicule.
