We are already in the middle of a mass extinction period. Hardly surprising they find one gone recently.

(Anyway even if there were no climate change it seems folk won't act responsible and wish to reproduce and urban sprawl over every bit of the land pushing the other species out. Some won't be happy until everywhere is one big multi-story mall/flats.)
