What was the population of the UK when voting to join the thing and what percentage thought it was a good idea? (wasn't the year 1972/1973?)
I think the population is now about 60 million, obviously not all elligiible to vote, as I say, just curious

At the time it was impossible to disclaim a peerage, and Benn was disqualified, the seat being awarded to his defeated Conservative opponent. He fought a successful battle to have the law changed and regained his seat. This proved timely, for a few months later the Earl of Home was chosen as PM. The new law enabled him to disclaim his peerage and seek a seat in the Commons. Home must be unique among PMs inasmuch as for three weeks until the by-election he was not a member of either house.
