Also, if Scotland go for another referendum to leave Britain, will we/them need a visa to visit?

Regarding Scotland, I would have thought the same arrangements as those for folk travelling from and to Eire would apply.

The “Le Touquet” Agreement (which allows for juxtaposed Border Controls in the UK and France) has nothing to do with the EU. It is a bilateral agreement between the UK and France (of the type that “normal” countries devise between themselves). When the pros and cons of Leaving/Remaining were being discussed over the past few weeks this was raised and I explained that France was most unlikely to withdraw from the agreement. The Port of Calais has just embarked on a one billion euro development plan. If hauliers and tourists suffer too much grief by stowaways being allowed to board their vehicles there are plenty of other routes ripe for development. It is not in France’s interests to rescind Le Touquet.

Incredible as it may seem, visa free travel was available across much of Europe long before the EU existed. All that was needed was a passport. This is still a requirement for UK citizens travelling to the continent and citizens from the continent travelling here (though they currently have the option of an ID Card). Should Scotland become independent they will not be members of the EU. Unless and until they are accepted for membership (in which case they will have to join the Schengen Area – if it still exists) there is no reason to suspect that any travel documents will be needed to travel between England and Scotland. However, it may depend on Scotland’s arrangements with EU countries. If they allow free access from the continent without robust border checks, that may have to be reconsidered.
