Corpse

Attended a friends funeral yesterday, minus his corpse.
He had left his body to medical research. My question is, what happens to his remains after they have finished with him?
Someone told me that his body would be returned to his relatives but I was under the impression that he would be disposed of by cremation.

Thanks Baldric. So what happens if the donors family don't want the body back or the additional expense (after funeral/memorial costs) of disposing of the body?
