How does the clue fit lapidary? It's to do with stones, isn't it?

But where is the word LAPIDARY defined within the clue ?
It's the definition mikey may be querying.
As well as the gem engraving meaning I found this

Another meaning of lapidary is a style of concise writing or speech, deriving from the short inscriptions needed on monuments, which are made of stone.
