Salt and Pepper hair

I know it's not really a phrase, but what does someone with salt and pepper hair actually look like??

I believe it is a combination of normal pigmented hair and silver / hair You can get salt and pepper tonics for people with grey hair so that they appear to have some natural pigmentation in with the grey hair.

It is when a dark haired person is greying in places. Lots of examples here:

Some dog breeds have salt and pepper as a coat colour. The Kennel Club breed standard for Schnauzers says:

'pepper and salt shades range from dark iron grey to light grey; hairs banded dark/light/dark'.

it usually means an even, all over, sprinkling of white and grey hairs - the colour of salt and pepper.

Thanks, it's something I've read in loads of Jodi Picoult's novels but never knew what it actually meant!!
