recorded delivery, also sending money

whats the feature of recorded delivery when you post something? what makes it different to the other postage methods? also, whats the most secure [and preferably cheapest] way to post money? thanks

recorded delivery means the person receiving the mail has to sign for it thus providing a "record" that delivery was made--u should never send money by mail--send a cheque-postal order or look at the po site for money transfers--i think they are called moneygrams--i have used these to send money to usa --u pay the cash over the counter and within 30 mins it is available for collection at the other end--the cost depends on the amount u r sending

As ajmmac says, the only feature recorded adds to normal mail is that there is a signature taken upon delivery. The mail is not tracked, nor treated as 'valuable' during transit. So it can still easily be stolen. There is no special compensation.

Special Delivery (the old 'registered') post is treated as 'valuable' and is tracked throughout the delivery pipeline. The compensation is much higher and you can increase it, at a cost, still further. You also get the signature on delivery.

In my opinion SD is fairly safe to send cash. I've never lost any doing it and if you do, you can take advantage of the appropriate compensation.

Bear in mind that neither recorded delivery nor special delivery guarantee delivery to a named person. They just get the signature of whoever opens the door.

For small amounts a postal order and ordinary postage will be cheaper than special delivery.

You can get special plastic envelopes for Special Delivery that cannot be steamed open. I think it's even possible that money is only covered when sent in one of them.

I'd still not send any large sum though. The recorded or special sticker is a dead giveaway - probably actually safer in a plain envelope by irdinary post.

Only time I ever sent a large cash sum, and was overseas, was �400, insured. BUT, I put the cash between 2 pieces of card, and labelled the envelope "Photographs, please do not bend" ! Got thru', no prob !

Another point with recorded delivery you may not be aware of - you may find the item is correctly delivered and signed for, but if you need to find out who signed for it you will have to pay again for the info.

This happened to me a couple of months ago - the people I had sent the letter to denied ever receiving it even though Ryal Mail confirmed it had been signed for. So I asked RM for the name of the signatory & they wouldn't give it to me unless I paid another �3-ish!

if it's within the uk, get the persons bank sort code and account number and go to a branch of their bank and pay the money in direct. this way you have a bank reciept that they have got the money, it's fast , and secure.and cost nothing except petrol money to drive to the bank!!
