my husband and i want to go to england for christmas but dont know what kind of id we would nee to travel out of states to europe

You'll need a passport not only to travel to Europe but probably to get back into the States

Why not just contact the British embassy in the USA,they can tell you,I would think we would operate the same system as you do,when we come from the UK to the States,when we come over we just need the Passport and we then sign a visa waiver form on the plane,simple, Hope you enjoy your stay here,but you will find it cold and a lot more expensive than USA.
