Why are computer monitors always landscape and not portrait?

They aren't. You can buy portrait monitors - usually for use in Desktop Publishing.
They tend to be widescreen because human beings see in a more widescreen format. As billynomates says though, you can get portrait ones (or at least ones that can be turned round). these are also very useful if you're doing lots of programming, so you can see more of the code at any one time.
