It was an object of awe - 2 boys, Carl and Stephen, were the only ones who ever got their palms slapped with it. Pain - minimal; shame - maximum. Sorry for the digression.
Years ago I saw biggish teenagers coming back from the mosque on Friday afternoon with their faces blotched with tears and one girls school was temporarily closed when reports of girls being forced to kneel all day at their desks and having their knuckles beaten with rods proved to be true. It is probably still going on in places in the UK.

I was beaten as a child as "punishment" for whatever misdemeanor I was supposed to have committed, and if my dad couldn't get a confession from one of us he'd beat all three, whether we did it or not.
