at one point i downloaded a song from a web page, but here is the weird part; it was a text document! the file could be opened in a notepad program, displaying lots of technical mumbo jumbo. but it could also be played in windows media player.

at sixth form, our files are monitored by an administrator and song files (mp3s, wma, etc) are deleted without our free will.

i was simply wondering if anybody knew how people manage to convert music files into text documents, but still make them playable in windows media player.

I suspect that for some reason, notepad just opened the mp3 file. you can get a text editor to open anything up.

no it is actually, a text document (txt.).

It is not a text file. It is a binary audio file which has had its filetype extension changed to .txt

Change any of your other .mp3 or .wma files to .txt and they will also open in your default text viewer/editor as "mumbo jumbo".

This will also get photographs past some email filters. Just change .jpg to .txt or .rtf as long as your recipient knows to rename it.
